2 ruling MPs demand inquiry into making N’ganj UNO OSD

Two ruling Awami League MPs have demanded that the public administration ministry carry out departmental enquiry regarding making Narayanganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Hosne Ara Begum Bina an officer on special duty (OSD).

Speaking on point of order, Meher Afroze Chumki from Gazipur-5 and Shamim Osman from Narayanganj-4 strongly criticised the authorities who made the UNO OSD.

They said making the 31-week pregnant UNO OSD was tantamount to harassment.

Chumki first raised the issue pointing to the facebook status of the UNO.

The AL MP said in the facebook status, the female UNO said, despite being married for nine years, she got pregnant around seven months ago.

“Despite carrying baby, I performed my duty as assistant returning officer in the 11th parliamentary election successfully,” Chumki said quoting the UNO’s facebook post.

Chumki said without any reason, the UNO was made OSD all on a sudden which came as a shock to her and it was tantamount to harassment.

The AL MP also said while going to hospital for medical check-up, the UNO came to know that she was made OSD causing immense mental pressure and she fell sick.

“She couldn’t bear the mental stress and gave birth to a premature baby who is now fighting for life at a city hospital,” Chumki said adding, the possible date for giving birth to the baby was April 20.

Our society is still unaware how to behave with pregnant women, a lamented Chumki said. We should not behave with a pregnant woman in such a way which could lead to loss of her baby.

Supporting Chumki’s speech, Shamim Osman said the female UNO carried out her duty successfully in the December 30 national election in his constituency.

“After knowing that she is pregnant, I even advised her not to take stress while discharging duties in the election. But I feel ashamed that the honest and successful UNO was made OSD which was nothing but injustice to her,” added Shamim.

“Why was she made OSD specially when she was carrying baby and when she discharged her duties successfully?” questioned Shamim.

Deputy Speaker Fazle Rabbi Miah who was presiding over the sitting said the state minister for public administration must look into the matter and will take necessary actions.
